Three and Me
The trinity... this is what we will dive into for the next 7 weeks. I am beyond excited to see our eyes grow wider as we learn and become more familiar with God. If you are anything like me, I started to get a little overwhelmed when reading about the Trinity. My little mind wants to desperately understand each facet of God, understand how He works and how this all goes together.
As we were flipping back and forth between the Old Testament and the New Testament, I quickly discovered one of my misconceptions. When I think of the Old Testament I think of God, The Father. Or maybe It isn’t really the Father that is in my mind, rather a God that you cannot touch, one that lives in clouds, on the top of a mountain with Moses and speaks through a burning bush. In my minds eye I have a picture of fire with clouds around it. Something I cannot fully see or understand, as it isn’t relatable to a human mind. God's personality is strong and mighty. His wrath is shone and His voice is booming. He is straight forward, giving laws on stone tablets. He is close yet distant, as He speaks to His people through prophets. A tangible God yet not so reachable.
"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters.” Gen 1:1-2
“Then God said, “Let us make human beings” in our image, to be like us.” Genesis 1:26
“In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God and the Word was God. He existed in the beginning with God. God created everything through Him, and nothing was created except through him. The Word gave life to everything that was created and his life brought light to everyone.” John 1:1-4 (The Word= Jesus)
When studying this weeks scripture in Genesis 1… we see the Trinity from the very beginning. We see God is ONE, yet in three persons. All throughout this lesson we saw scriptures where it speaks of God then listed the three Godhead. Let’s look at Matthew 28:19
“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name (singular) of the Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit.”
For some time I have thought of the Trinity as pieces of a pie… each piece having its own part, however, I have learned to look at this different now. Pieces of a pie are too separate. You can take one piece away and you still see that it is a pie. However God is fully each one of the Persons. So I picture the three of them intertwined with each other, constantly pointing and glorIfying each other. Think of it this way, in your own body we have a body, soul and spirit. You can’t take you soul out of you on Monday expecting to go about your normal day. Each part of our humanness is made of these three parts. It is the same way with the Trinity. You can’t have one without the other. It’s impossible to separate them.
“Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation” Colossians 1:15
Jesus Christ is God in the flesh. God wants to be relatable. He is a relational God. So God came down to earth in the flesh and took on human form. Jesus gave up His deity in order to live on earth for 33 years. He lived in this broken world experiencing rejection, betrayal, abuse, tears, suffering, and death. Why? So we can go to Jesus and realize that He understands the pain that we experience. So when you try to picture what God looks like, look to Jesus because Jesus is God in human form.
Jesus said, “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth, for He will not speak on his own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak and He will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me, for He will take what is mine and declare it you. All that the Father is mine; therefore I said that He will take what is mine and declare it to you.” John 16:12-15
Jesus is about to be crucified and He is speaking to His disciples. He is letting them know that the Holy Spirit will come to them, to live IN them, after Jesus is ascends into heaven. As Jesus speaks, you see the three Godhead. The Holy Spirit speaks what He hears from the Father, the message regarding the Son. The Holy Spirit will glorify and Honor Jesus, and all things the Father have is Jesus’s. Again, seeing the interweaving of the God head, One God in three Persons.
Baby steps… we need to see this in small bites. So let’s leave this lesson with three highlights Tara mentioned in the video:
God is Holy, set apart
Jesus~ God is with us
Holy Spirit~ God is IN us
Each lesson will build on the other and eventually we will receive a clearer understanding of the Trinity. Next week we will focus on God the Father. He will be in the spotlight next week. Can’t wait to see what we learn!
